Why are node version and protocol version different?

Why are node version and protocol version different?

At the time of writing, Nano's most recent node version is 19, whereas the protocol version is 17 (source).

Are there good reasons for this difference apart from historical ones? Is it possible to just assimilate the two numbers in order to avoid any confusion?

My analysis is that Cointiply is still the easiest way to get some free Satoshis
